don’t think they really want independence. they do alright as a territory of USA.

unfortunately the majority of Puerto Ricans, over 65%, do not want independence. This from the last three polls taken when they vote on the issue.
besides the same thiing could have been said of Hawaii when we annexed it. Only now is Hawaii Americanized.
this issue has been debated for decades. Many of the Puerto Rican Nationalists who advocated independence decades ago were jailed.
Pedro Albizu Campos comes to mind. he was followed by the FBi and tortured by the US government. from wikipedia:

Last year, Peurto Ricans held a vote to see if they wanted to be annexed as a state of the U.S. Puerto Rico has been our commonwealth for more than a century, and many Puerto Ricans enjoy the same priveleges as we Americans. Their independence is up to them, yet we would not let go of them easily. Puerto Ricans are fine with being called Americans. If you really take a closer look, Puerto Rico was always unified with the U.S. Pierlussi is just one of few Puerto Ricans who do not want to be classified as Americans. However, Puerto Ricans are still not American citizens.

I think Puerto Rico should be independent from the US. They should have been given their independence a long time ago just as Cuba and the Phillipines.

personally, I’d prefer to see Puerto Rico given a choice between statehood and independence, rather than an opportunity for either or to continue as a commonwealth. It’s never been a separate country though, having gone from Spanish colonial rule to American semi-colonial rule. but either way, it should be their choice and I’d have no problem with either choice.
