Predicament made by Westhill: What did McCain mean when he said prosecutions would make the US “no better than a banana republic”?
McCain: Prosecutions Would Make Us “No Better Than a Banana Republic”
I thought he was against torture, so why wouldn’t he want the lawyers and better yet, the policy makers who authorized the torture to be punished?
This is not purely a rhetorical question, I am wondering what is the thinking behind his “banana republic” statement?
This is all about What did McCain mean when he said prosecutions would make the US “no better than a banana republic”? that you will have got to fix dilemmas in their own business. McCain is wrong, I don’t think he knows the proper definition of a ‘Banana Republic’. Our Republic needs to support justice on it’s own shores, without justice and the rule of law, we are nothing.

Basically, what he means is that if prosecutions continue forward, each successive administration is open to prosecution by the new administration as a tool for political revenge. For example, the next administration could find crimes that the current administration has “committed” in Pakistan. They could then proceed with trials and punishments, and seriously, where does that get our country considering the threat we agree we face from Islamic Extremism?

i think it is regards to the practices of such a republic. leaders tend to put/get into place supporters who rubber stamp their policies. if you dissent, you are replaced. chavez is doing it in venezuela. in regards to the prosecutions and “torture” the top lawyers made the call and you cannot go back and charge people for acting in good faith based on the laws as it was described to them. it was not one person it was several who made those decisions including the dem leadership. also, it will make people fearful to do their job for fear of being replaced, ie the cia, fbi and so on. so they would not do their best. i think he is offbase but maybe there is a reason he used this term that he can justify.
